Descriptions of Modalities

Swedish Massage: Known as a “classic massage” and is the best known and most widely practiced type of massage therapy. Swedish massage is the combination of many different techniques rolled into one session. Effleurage: a smooth, gliding stroke used to relax soft tissue. Petrissage: the squeezing, rolling, or kneading that follows effleurage. Friction: quick rubbing and/or compression with movement. Vibration: quick oscillating movements that shake and vibrate the body. Tapotement: a rhythmic tapping, pounding and patting of the body. The motion is like drumming, produced by hands by cupping, hacking, and chopping. Some of the benefits of Swedish massage include: pain relief, relief of headaches, increased blood flow, reduced stress, improved posture, rehabilitation for muscle injuries, increased flexibility, increased overall energy, improved sleep quality and breakdown of scar tissue.

Neuromuscular Therapy (Trigger Point Therapy): An effective modality that address trigger points which are highly irritable knots within the taut bands of the skeletal muscles and/or fascia and tend to be the cause of ongoing muscular pain. To release a trigger point we use deep concentrated pressure on the point with fingers, thumbs or elbows to cause the muscle to relax and the pain to be alleviated. Using neuromuscular therapy, we can assist with treating pain from muscle strain, overuse, trauma, and chronic pain involving the muscular and nervous systems. It can also help with repetitive motion injury, stress, and poor posture that can manifest with trigger points. Trigger points can lead to referral pain, which refers to a phenomenon in which areas far away from the trigger point experience sensations of pain, tingling or numbness.

Acupressure: Used for thousands of years in China, often called acupuncture without the needles, involves the application of manual pressure (usually with the fingertips) to specific points to interact with energy flowing through the body. Energy circulates through natural pathways in the body called meridians. Blockage of this flow or an imbalance can cause illness and pain. Acupressure helps to correct functional imbalances and restore the flow thus returning the body to a more natural state of well-being. Acupressure can help with: pain, muscle tension, headache, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, stress, nausea, menstrual cramps, and deficiencies in many of the body’s systems (circulatory, lymphatic, hormonal, digestive, immune).
